Choti Diwali or Narak Chaturdashi Puja Vidhi

Choti Diwali is celebrated on the 14th day of Krishna Paksh in the month of Karthik. Choti Diwali is the 2nd day of Diwali festival and offering your prayings to Lord Ganesha and Narak Chaturdashi will bring peace and prosperity in your life. The day is known as Narak Chaturdashi as he was killed by Lord Krishna on this day.

Significance

According to Hindu mythology, there was a demon King Naraksur who imprisoned 16,000 daughters of various Gods after winning a war of various deities. Satyabhama, wife of Lord Krishna got angered with this act and decided to punish Narkasur. She killed him and freed all the daughters. Sri Krishna later married all those freed daughters.

  • Place a chowki on the area where you want to perform puja.
  • Spread red cloth on the chowki and place the Lakshmi Ganesh idol or picture of Ganesh and Lakshmi on chowki.
  • Put a small plate on the chowki and put some silver coins on it.
  • Take a decorative thali or any simple thali and decorate it with flowers and colors.
  • Put 11 or 21 mitti deepak on it.
  • Place wicks on all of those diyas and fill it with mustard oil or sesame oil.
  • Create a swastika by using roli at the centre of the thali.
  • Put some makhana, murmura and kheer in them.
  • Start with middle four diyas and light them first followed by others.
  • Apply tilak to Ganesh and Lakshmi. Also, apply rice on the tilak.
  • Apply roli and rice on silver coins.
  • Apply roli and tilak on all diyas.
  • Now leave some diyas on the thali and place rest of them on the entrance and other places of your house.
  • Recite Lakshmi mantra 108 times.
  • Everyone does pranam to elders and seek their blessings after puja.

Narak Chaturdashi Snan is deliberated as the most propitious ritual to perform during the choti Diwali. This marks the ending of darkness and the beginning of happiness in the life of devotee.

Mantra during bath

Ashwatthama balirvyaso Hanumancha vibheeshanah krupah Parashurashcha sapthaithe Chiranjeevinah

Before giving bath to children, chant this mantra Akshata (consecrated rice) on childrens heads. After bath, chant this mantra

Bhramayeth snanamadhyethu narakasya kshayayahi
Sheetaloshta samayuktha sakantaka dalanvitha
Hara papa mapaamaarga Bhramyamaanah punah punah

While doing puja in the evening

Chaturdashyam thu Yedeepaan narakaya dadanthi cha
Thesham pitruganassarve narakath swarga maapnuyu
