The holiness of this month has been glorified in several scriptures. Those who are the devotees observe some important austerities, prayers and fasts for the occasion of the Shravan month. This was the time when Lord Shiva had consumed the poisonous halahala which emanated from Samudra Manthan, one which is between the devas and the asuras. The quest is majorly for nectar (ambrosia). During the Manthan, the blue ocean produced a lot of valuable gemstones, cows, bows, the moon, conch, goddess riches etc. They were then taken up by the holy gods and destructive demons. Fourteen different types of gemstones appeared from the ocean which was divided among the Gods. When the deadliest poison emerged from the ocean, all of the important people cringed back fearing death or that it might destroy the universe. However, it was Shiva who courageously drank the poison to save the world which he loved the most. His wife, while seeing him gulp down the halahala, cut his throat to prevent the poison from going into his body. This is why his throat turned blue and he began to be called ‘Neelkantha’.
