For the Hindu community, the Kartik month holds special significance as it is dedicated to both Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. Devotees visit the temples of these deities in order to seek their blessings. Others complete their puja shopping online days before the actual celebration.

Cultural Significance Of Kartik Purnima

This auspicious day is a celebration of honoring Lord Vishnu who incarnated as Matsyavatram or Matsya on Kartik Purnima. Popular beliefs are that Matsya is the first avatar of Lord Vishnu out of his other avatars. Further, the deity takes the avatar of a giant fish for rescuing Manu, the first man, from big harm.

Another legend that is often associated with Kartik Purnima is Lord Shiva. He had killed Tripurasura, the demon king. There were instances where the Devas were celebrating this day in heaven by lighting thousands of diyas. Thus, this day is also popular as “Deva Deepavali.”

The celebration is different in other parts of the country. For example, in Varanasi, devotees rejoice on this day by lighting earthen lamps in their houses. Also, they light diyas and candles around the banks of the river Ganga. On the other hand, some devotees throng the temples of Lord Shiva and worship the Linga. Lighting diyas near the Tulsi plant is a common occurrence on this day.

Mythological Tales About Kartik Purnima And The Rituals

The day begins with worshippers going to the river and taking a ritualistic bath or “Nadi Snaan.” People pray to Lord Shiva and observe fast for the whole day.
