The History:-

The Story of Hiranyakashyap:-

There was a haughty demon king Hiranyakashyap. He had no morals and he didn’t allow the people of his kingdom to pray. He declared himself as God. The only thing he wanted is to become immortal. As a result, he started to pray and please Lord Brahma. So, Lord Brahma came and granted him the power of five special powers. The five boons according to everyone and we quote were:

neither a human nor an animal would be able to kill him; neither he would be killed inside the door nor outside the door, neither he would be killed during the day nor at night, neither he would be killed by any Astra nor by any Shastra, neither he would be killed on the land nor in the water or in the air.”

After getting all these powers, Hiranyakashyap thought of himself as God. He exiled everyone who prayed. But, as Karma Works he had a son Prahlada who was an ardent devotee of Vishnu. As time went by, Hiranyakashyap could not tolerate his son so much so that he decided to kill him. All his attempts failed and he turned to sister Holika for help.

Power of Holika:-

Holika, the sister of Hiranyakashyap was blessed with another boon by Lord Brahma. The blessing was that the fire could never harm her. She had a shawl to protect her from flames. So, as per the orders of Hiranyakashyap, she took Prahlada in her lap and sat in the fire. But, the shawl flew and covered Prahlada. As a result, Holika burnt and Prahlada stayed safe.

The Final Encounter:-

Hiranyakashyap was very frustrated by now. So, he decided to take matters in his own hands and kill him. He began to tie Prahlada against a pillar and challenged him to call his God. Prahlad kept praying but Hiranyakashyap laughed. As he was about to kill him, he saw something strange appear from the pillar. It was Narasimha. So, not going against Brahma’s wishes Narasimha succeeded in killing him. He took him to the doorstep (which was neither outside nor inside), it was dusk (not day or night), he took him in his lap (nor land, water or air), and tore him with claws (no weapons.) Narasimha was half human and half animal (he was neither a human or animal completely.)

The Moral of this Story:-

The moral of this story is that no matter how powerful you are, evil ends and good wins. Also, too much greed is not good.
